Love That Album podcast Episode 124 - Todd Rundgren's "Something Anything"

June 26, 2019

Hello….it’s Love That Album.
Todd Rundgren must have shares in a millinery, because he wears a lot of hats. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, video producer, (it can be argued) comedian…….He doesn’t do anything by half-measures. Rundgren started his recording career with rock group Nazz in the late 60s, then branched out to work as a producer for Bearsville Records when he found out he was unhappy with other producers’ work. He’s responsible for a multitude of records as producer / engineer for the likes of The Tubes, The Band, Cheap Trick, and ummmm……Meatloaf.

He started a run of his own records at Bearsville with 1970’s Runt establishing a very Rundgren-esque sound. For this episode of the podcast, I am joined by film blogger Kerry Gately Fristoe to talk about his third album, “Something / Anything.” How many other artists would release a double-album of diverse studio material that early in their career? With 3 sides of the album featuring the one musician playing every instrument….really well?

Kerry and I talk about all manner of things around this album including arson, venereal diseases, Vikings, and zits…..as well as the less common subject matter from songwriters of love and heartbreak. We took some diversions (as is this show’s modus operandi), but in hindsight, not nearly enough.

A huge thank you goes to Kerry for being such a great co-host for this one.
