085: How To Talk To Your Spouse Even If You Disagree with Karen Tibbals
Are there some things that you feel like you can never talk about 'cuz you both have such different views? One of you either gets mad, walks out, or maybe shuts down? There's a way to have a conversation about it and both of you will be understood! In this episode, the author of Persuade, Don't Preach, Karen Tibbals shares with us the values we each have.
Yes, there are some values that every person on this planet has. The question is how to they get there. For example, we all value sacredly. For some of us, that means religion, spirituality, etc while for others that can be clean eating and animal rights. There's no right or wrong, it's about how you were created and how you view the world. Yes, your right, some of us value somethings more than others. And that's exactly the point. Once you understand what your partner's main values are and how they approach them, you'll know how to talk to them about anything - even picking up the laundry.
Karen Tibbals is a former consumer behavior expert who left that career to go to seminary. While she was there, she found a new theory in political psychology that changed the way she thought about why people behave the way they do. She does a lot of thinking about this theory can be applied in everyday life and has written two books using this theory. She loves to give talks to all sorts of groups about how we can come together if we learn to talk to each other differently.
