How to cultivate friendship with God

September 06, 2020

In John 15, as Jesus prepares to go to the cross, he declares to his disciples that he considers them his friends.

What does it mean, as disciples ourselves, to cultivate friendship with God?

What is the quality of such a connection?

We will explore how we are joined with a Friend who is both transcendent yet immanent, "other" yet familiar, one whose very nature is a juxtaposition of the temporality and familiarity of flesh, with the limitless sustenance of the divine. How can we grow in our understanding of this friendship, and what is our part in its cultivation? We will explore and ask: do we believe that Jesus our friend is for us? Do we live aware of his abiding presence as both a mutual sharing of life and a call to love others radically? Do we approach Him in the familiarity of being friends, and yet in expectancy that he is a Friend whose provision never runs out?
