“Your rod and staff, they comfort me.” Where the first part of verse four speaks to the comfort of the Shepherd’s presence, this part speaks to his power.  Part of the sheep’s comfort is knowing that the shepherd protects (rod) and guides (staff).  For the believer, we hear this echoed in Jesus’ words that all authority is his, and that he will be with us always.
