Richard Somers, American Hero from Somers Point

August 30, 2022

Richard Somers of Somers Point was a true American hero.  At one time, every school child was taught his story. Now, Richard Somers is cancelled. His remarkable story is forgotten.

There are many reasons for this. One is that it includes the fact that until America became a nation, slavery was still normal in most of the world. At that time, white Europeans and Americans were also attacked, captured and sold as slaves.

For a thousand years, the biggest and richest slave centers in the world were  Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli in Islamic North Africa. Two hundred years ago, America fought the Barbary Wars to stop this.

Richard Somers was killed in that war. He died on September Fourth, Eighteen Oh Four. Please join our group in remembering him at three o’ clock this Labor Day Sunday, September fourth.  Meet us by his statue and mural at 801 Shore Road, in Somers Point.
