Amazon has built this colossus in the retail industry by having the best pricing and the best availability ever imagined. And now what Amazon has done is basically to say that it’s not going to use its powerful marketing tools of price and availability to benefit Hachette’s print books. Why wouldn’t Amazon have the right to make that decision? They’ve never said they’re not going to carry Hachette’s print books, but it’s up to them whether they want to hold inventory or they just want to fulfill order by order. And it’s up to them whether they want to take preorders or just start shipping the book when it arrives. I think it’s quite an interesting notion to think that they owe anything to Hachette in terms of using their own price and availability infrastructure to benefit Hachette if Hachette isn’t going to agree to a contract with them.
