You could imagine a million conceptual ways that you could design that feature (eBook updates) so that it doesn’t put people at risk. Such as, having the device poll a server to find out if there are any updates for its files and then notifying the owner of the device when there are updates and allowing the owner to choose and also, for example, saving the old version so the owner could revert if the update turned out to be faulty in some way. If you wanted to maximize the utility of the Kindle to owners instead of maximize the ability to do creepy, Orwellian junk with it that’s how you’d do it.
