Ep 008 - Rachel Coleman: Is homeschooling right for your child?

April 20, 2016

Have you ever considered homeschooling your child because they are being bullied, you are a military family not wanting to have your kids switch curriculums as much, and/or for religious reasons??
As a former military family, homeschooling was becoming more popular as we were leaving the military. Many military families had opted to homeschool their children through online programs such as Connections Academy or K12 (online public schools) so they would not have to take their kids in and out of school with the frequent moves. At one point our family had considered one of these online education programs (and we may still in the future).
Tune in to this fascinating conversation with the Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Director of Research for the Coalition for Responsible Home Education, Rachel Coleman, as she discusses her experience as a homeschooled human, where homeschooling needs to improve, the concept of unschooling, and why accountability is essential (and needed) in the homeschool communities.
Rachel Coleman is the executive director of the Coalition for Responsible Home Education. She was homeschooled from kindergarten and high school and became interested in homeschool reform while studying the history of children and childhood in graduate school. She is an instructor at Indiana University and is working on her dissertation on evangelical concerns about the public schools from the 1920s through the 1980s. She is the mother of two children and lives in Bloomington, Indiana.
