#130 The Tale of the California Highway Predator
Two days after Christmas in 1986, 20 year old Cara Evelyn Knott was driving to her home where she lived with her parents in El Cajon, California after spending time with her boyfriend who was sick that day in Escondido. When she didn’t arrive home in at the time she expected, her father, Sam was sure something was wrong. He drove all night looking for any sign of Cara or her car. It wasn’t until the following day that her VW bug was spotted abandoned on a dead end, desolate exit ramp under a bridge. Shortly thereafter, he lifeless body was also discovered. She had been bludgeoned, strangled, and thrown off the bridge. After a 3 week investigation, authorities arrested Craig Peyer. What made this case even more heartbreaking - Peyer was a 13 year veteran CHP officer - someone who should be trusted to protect and serve.
