Just A Dream Away
Memories of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights
This is the last year of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights (OFSODL) at Hollywood Studios. Whatever this means for the future of the Streets of America is unknown, though we have seen changes to this area of the Park force changes on the Christmas spectacular. This leads me back into the annals of my earliest Walt Disney World memories...On our first family trip to Walt Disney World in 1998, we were stunned and delighted by the OFSODL. At that time, the seasonal event was very different. The Christmas lights had no special effects; there were just a ton of lights strung all about the Streets of America. The sheer amount of lights was amazing! Of course, some features were in place even then, such as Mickey shaking hands with Santa. And every night, it snowed in the middle of Florida - a startling bit of magic that we enjoyed so much the first time we got to experience it (now, maybe not so much). But you have to remember, the Streets of America were not the only location for the Lights. We were amongst the lucky many that got to see the Lights when they also set Residential Street aglow. When the Backlot Tour actually still included a backlot, the Lights became a special opportunity to walk the route of some of the street that was home to many "famous" house fronts. I was set into wonderment getting to walk past Alice's house, George of the Jungle's tree house and the Golden Girls house, among others. Having all of these house fronts covered in sparkling lights made the Street truly feel like any neighborhood in America. There was one other difference to the OFSODL we know today...the special glasses. While I love the present way the Studios make the lights dance, I will always miss the first way that I experienced this wonderful holiday spectacle. Every person received a pair of glasses that almost looked like your run-of-the-mill 3D glasses from a gas station. However, these glasses added a fun effect when you looked into the millions of lights...around each light you would see the outlines of four golden Angels. Move your head, and the angelic beings would shift, sort of looking like they were dancing. In addition to the fun effect, you also got to walk away with a nice souvenir since the glasses worked when you looked at any lightbulb anywhere. I love the current rendition of the Dancing Lights. On our honeymoon, Chris and I experienced the vibrant show of coordinated dancing LED lights, roaming the Streets of America and searching for Hidden Mickeys (and that darn black cat) and getting slightly disoriented by the flashing display set to some of the best Christmas music around. (Not Feliz Navidad; after hearing that song twice, I am done with it for the whole season.) We especially loved the lights canopy on San Francisco Street and will never cease to be amazed by it when we see it in videos and pictures. Still, for all its present glory, I miss the old days of the OFSODL. When it is long gone, I think that former presentation is the one that I will miss and tell my kids about as they look at my childhood pictures.Good-bye, Dancing Lights! And thanks for the memories!
