Just A Dream Away
Disney Love Letter to Awkward Character Interactions
Dear Awkward Character Interactions,I love you. I mean, I am not one to waste my time standing in a line to meet a character, so maybe my inexperience just lends my rare character interactions to a certain level of awkwardness. Practice makes perfect and whatnot, they say. I also don't spend enough of my time reading articles and whatnot that give great ideas of what to say to your favorite characters when you meet them. Nor do I interpret the hand gestures of non-face characters with anything like precision. I guess I am putting myself into these situations. Even so, I get endless pleasure out of that awkward moment when I meet a character and lose my cool just trying to be clever with them. It never goes well. Let's see some examples:My mom, sister and I actually stood in line to meet Gaston by Gaston's Tavern last October. He was having great chats with teenage girls and kids in front of us. I was ready! I love Gaston (#TeamGaston)! I thought I had great material before me because I was wearing a Beauty and the Beast shirt that day. So, we get up there, we takes some pictures after he encourages us "Ladies, there is more than enough to go around." We giggle in glee and are getting back cameras from the handler when I try to assure Gaston that I always believe Belle should choose him, regardless of Beast being with her on my shirt. Yep...nothing. He couldn't have cared less. I got nothin'. He had shut it down at this point. Character Fail Number One.Okay, so now let's go without prepared dialogue and see how that goes. I meet Rapunzel (while Chris stays back to make sure he doesn't have to meet her) in Princess Fairy Tale late one Saturday night. There is no one else in the room with us, but the handlers and Princesses. Rapunzel is ready to go, man! Perfect energy and characterization. I dive right in, because I do love this character. She throws out some quotes from the movie in question form ("Have you been having the best day ever?"), just having fun chatting with me. Oh dear, it all goes wrong. I get too excited to prove my Tangled knowledge. Like, I am giving her way too much information about our day, also tying in quotes from her films to impress this poor Princess ("Well, we woke up way before 7 a.m."). Then, that awkward moment when she pretty much cuts me off from my Tangled ramblings to move me along to the picture. I am immediately embarrassed. Why can't I control my mouth and Disney passion? I went all Disney fangirl on this woman and she had to shut me up. Character Fail Number Two.Last one is more Chris, but I totally caused it. We were at Chef Mickey's Brunch and I left our table when I knew Minnie wasn't too far from us. But the characters spend so much time at tables with kids and larger groups, so you don't think you will miss out. Well, I did. I left Chris all alone when Minnie came up. Chris is not about the character meet and greets. He is about the food! I think Minnie knew this, because (so he tells me) she tormented him. She forced him to get a picture with her. Then, she sat across from him at the table, right there in my seat, just staring at him. Poor Chris! Seriously, #awkward! I don't know if he will ever forgive me for putting him in this situation (but I am kind of glad I did, because I love hearing him tell this story). All this to say, I do love you Awkward Character Interactions! You prove to me that it is okay not to be someone who meets characters beyond the customary Character Breakfast. I am just not that girl; I try too hard to be clever, expecting some comedy gold that is simply not going to happen. Character meet and greets keep me humble, and I need that in my life. You have taught me who I am, or more like who I am not. So go out and the rest of you meet your fave characters. I have learned that I should leave these character interactions to the professionals.Love you Awkward Character Interactions (though maybe we should take a break from this relationship for, like, fore
