Rav Tzvi Hirsh Friedman of Liska
Rav Tzvi Hirsh Friedman (1808-1874), known as the Liska Rebbe, was an influential 19th century chassidic leader in Hungary. A student of the father of Hungarian Hasidism, Rav Moshe Teitelbaum, the Yismach Moshe, Rav Tzvi Hirsh was appointed rabbi in Liska (Olaszliszka), where he established his court as well.
Quickly emerging as one of the leading rabbinic figures, as well as chassidic leaders of Hungarian Jewry in the 19th century, he was renowned as well for his care for the poor and downtrodden.
Upon his passing in 1874, he was succeeded by his son in law Rav Chaim Friedlander. His son Rav Tzvi Hirsh became a martyr of the Nazis in 1944. His surviving sons reestablished the Liska court in post war New York.
