Season 2, Episode 4: Nils Lofgren (Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band)
An interview with legendary musician Nils Lofgren is featured on the latest episode of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media network. The E Street Band and Crazy Horse member chatted with JamBase’s Scott Bernstein about three new albums involving Neil Young and his Crazy Horse bandmates.
Lofgren was enjoying a day off from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s first tour since 2017 when he connected with Bernstein via a video call. Nils and Scotty began by discussing All Roads Lead Home, a new album released last Friday featuring individual contributions from all four members of Crazy Horse — Lofgren, Neil Young, bassist Ralph Molina and drummer Billy Talbot. The talented multi-instrumentalist explained how the excellent LP came together and the songs he wrote for the project.
Talk turned for a moment to World Record, the third Neil Young & Crazy Horse album released in the span of three years. Lofgren then shared memories of the sessions that yielded Young’s landmark Tonight’s The Night LP and touring in support of the album. Nils, Ralph Molina, Billy Talbot and the late Ben Keith, dubbed The Santa Monica Flyers backed Young on a run which was a cathartic experience following the deaths of original Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry. Neil Young & The Santa Monica Flyers’ November 5, 1973 concert in London is documented on Somewhere Under The Rainbow, a new installment of Young’s Official Bootleg Series due out on April 14.
