Episode 152: Rayland Baxter
Episode 152 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with Rayland Baxter. The singer-songwriter chatted with JamBase’s Nate Todd about his recently released album, If I Were A Butterfly and more.
Nate connected with Rayland Baxter while the singer-songwriter was enjoying some time in Key West, Florida after participating in the recent Coast Is Clear festival. While hanging out at a restaurant on the beach, Rayland painted a vivid picture of his time recording his fourth studio album and first of original material in four years, If I Were A Butterfly, at an old Kentucky rubberband factory turned recording facility called Thunder Sound.
Rayland and Nate also took deep dives into some of the album’s tracks including opener, “If I Were A Butterfly,” which was inspired by Rayland discovering a tape of him singing when he was four years old. Additionally, the singer-songwriter gave insights into “Tadpole” and revealed the thread that runs between the songs “Dirty Knees” and “My Argentina.”
Rayland also discusses some of the guests on If I Were A Butterfly including his late father, renowned pedal steel guitar player Bucky Baxter, who collaborated with Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and many more. Bucky Baxter passed away in May 2020 not long after contributing to the album. The conversation concludes with Rayland talking about how If I Were A Butterfly songs are fitting into his live repertoire and his future touring plans as the singer-songwriter just announced a slate of 2023 spring tour dates.
