Episode 136: Delicate Steve

August 11, 2022

Episode 136 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with Delicate Steve (guitarist Steve Marion). JamBase’s Andy Kahn recently caught up with Steve to talk about his new album, After Hours, and much more.

Marion recalled his time in Tucson, Arizona, where he decamped at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The year he lived there was spent away from the guitar and he talked about the effect that had on his musicianship, and ultimately the new record.

Marion gave the backstory on the 1966 Fender Stratocaster guitar that was the only guitar he played on the album. It turns out the guitarist not really much of a gear head and instead left the search for the perfect Strat to his friend and cohort Ofir Ganon. Marion described embracing the sound of the guitar, which was a different approach from many of his past recordings that tended to strive for obscure sounds from the instrument.

Other topics that were explored included his songwriting process and how the album came together during recording sessions held last year. Among the other musicians who appeared on After Hours were Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco and bassist Shahzad Ismaily and the discussion explored how they each played integral roles in creating the album.

The interview also touched on Steve’s experience as a touring member of The Black Keys in 2019 and 2020, leading up to the pandemic. The guitarist shared some interesting insights from the perspective of someone who has a successful solo career stepping into that role of touring musician.
