Episode 122: Particle Kid (Micah Nelson)

April 21, 2022

Episode 122 of The JamBase Podcast, a partner of the Osiris Media Network, features an interview with multi-instrumentalist Micah Nelson. JamBase’s Andy Kahn interviewed Micah about his new Particle Kid album, Time Capsule, and much more.

Micah has released several records under the moniker Particle Kid, which was bestowed upon him by his father, legendary country musician Willie Nelson. (There’s a funny story about Willie intending to call him the “Prodigal Son.”) The new album Time Capsule is an impressive 26-track collection that was recorded over the past five or six years.

Micah detailed the various locations the album was recorded, from hotel laptop sessions to bedroom recordings, to full-fledged professional recording studios. Micah discussed his songwriting process and how the theme of time trickled into the project. He talked about the concept of an album is like a time capsule, and how he viewed the new record as a representation of a specific period of time.

Time Capsule features several special guests and Micah explained his desire to work with the many talented musicians that contributed to the new Particle Kid album. Contributors include J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Margo Price, Jeremy Ivey, Sunny War, Sean Ono Lennon, Mickey Raphael, Paul Bushnell and others, some of whom are talked about during the interview.

Willie Nelson also appears on Time Capsule, and Micah recalled the special moments getting to record with his father. The sessions took place during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic when Micah and his family were lockdown together in Texas. Micah said that the experience, though during uncertain times, was particularly special for the family to be together without work commitments, echoing what his brother Lukas Nelson told me last year in an interview for The JamBase Podcast.

The interview with Micah also touched on his plans for 2022, touring and performing with The Flaming Lips and much more.
