3.01 - It Just Is Podcast

February 09, 2014

Kicking off season three we jump right into the fun and talk about some of the recent lawsuits that have opened up in the areas of science and religion.

One man is suing NASA because of a rock found on mars which he believes is the answer we’ve been looking for regarding alien life. Is he justified with his legal action? Is NASA really hiding something from the public? Or is the man just getting a little too excited about a simple space rock?

We then talk about a lawsuit against the LDS church leader requiring him to appear in an England court to respond to various church teachings, which two people believe are misleading, untrue, and are fraudulent. We’ll look at some of the claims and break it down. Are the men justified with their lawsuit? What does this mean with religions, faith and our legal systems? Can anyone sue their church for faith based claims? Or is faith being debunked by science in our modern age? Who will follow which side when science challenges faith?

Do camels prove that the Bible is inaccurate? We look at new research that suggests the Bible was written long after the events in the book and challenges it as a historical document. What does this mean for the Bible and the faiths that depend on it’s legitimacy? Will people even listen to the new sciences that come out challenging religious beliefs, or will cognitive dissonance rule all? Listen and decide for yourself as we go into these topics and break it down.

And are scientists looking for real life ‘X-Men’? We’ll talk about a new study that is asking for anyone that has any special powers or abilities to come forth for the chance to receive $10,000. Why are they wanting these type of people? What will they do with them? And what will the research hope to provide? We break it down and talk about who is behind the study and enjoy a blast from the past into the magical world of the X-Men.

We then discuss a few different research studies that investigate human footprints found over 800,000 years ago. Were humans walking around that long ago? Have they really found their footprints? Some scientists are saying yes! We also look at another study that says ‘Adam’ (from Adam & Eve) existed 209,000 years ago! Wait – but didn’t we just find footprints from 800,000 years ago? And we look at yet another study that claims to have a footprint from over 500 million years ago. Why are all these different studies giving different times? And were humans really wandering around a lot longer than we ever thought before? What does it mean with various religious faiths (such as the LDS) that claim humans have only been around for 6,000 years or so?

And with all the talk about footprints, Satan decides to leave us a special treat and reads a poem dedicated to Shaun and Shep, Footprints in the Sand, to close the show.
