What’s New For 2023 Volkswagen ID.4

There are a bunch of new elements to consider for ID.4.

ID.4 EV Incentives

Headlining 2023 ID.4’s newness is something that might otherwise go unnoticed.

And that is the five-seat EV’s assembly location.  Because while VW is a preeminent European brand.  2023 ID.4s are being assembled in the United States.

Assembly location can be a big factor due to government incentives.  But those incentives are moving targets.

So, to determine if the ID.4 you want is being incentivized.  It’s best to reach out to our favorite Southern California Volkswagen dealer.  And they can address your specifics.

Lower Starting Price Point

ID.4’s base model is now coming in at $37,495.

Sure, that’s thanks to a smaller battery and range.  But if you want in the EV game, it’s a changer.

Enhancing Technology And Design

Standard tech now includes a big new 12-infotainment touchscreen.

Also, park assist plus is now standard.  And that’s with memory parking.

Additionally, design tweaks.  New alloy wheels across all trims.  Plus new exterior colors are on the menu.

Chattanooga, TN Assembly

ID.4’s assembly location could save you some money.

Volkswagen’s been pouring investments into Chattanooga, Tennessee.  Most recently $800M.

And ID.4 is the first EV to benefit. More important to you, is the potential incentives because of it.

Trims And Prices

When it comes to 2023 ID.4 trims.

VW is calling the options simple.  We’re listing them all below.

But the folks at VW, group them into three main trims.  With the Standard/Pro being the entry-level.  Then there’s the ‘S’ trim.  And finally, the ‘S Plus’ trim.

From there Volkswagen states you have options of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.  And then battery options.

We’re not sure if that’s simple.  But you have many options.  And that’s always good.

2023 VW ID.4 Trims & starting MSRPs:

  • Standard $37,495
  • Pro $42,495
    • w/AWD $46,295

  • S $42,495
  • Pro S $47,495
    • w/AWD $51,295

  • Pro S Plus $49,945
    • w/ AWD $53,745

EV Motor, Range, And MPGe

The ID.4 is built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle platform.

MEB EV Architecture

MEB stands for modular electric drive matrix.  Where does MEB come from that?  Not sure.

But it boils down to a skateboard type of framework.  It places the vehicle’s battery below and across the vehicle’s cabin area.  While placing the motor or motors between the front and rear wheels.

ID.4 Motor

For ID.4 2023, you can opt for a single motor or two of them.

If it’s a single motor then you’re getting a rear-wheel drive.  And if it’s a dual motor then all wheels will be driving you.

The RWD motor is a PSM – permanent magnet synchronous.  And the motor powering the front wheels is an ASM – asynchronous.  (We know, another couple of odd acronyms.)

When going with RWD only you receive 201 horsepower.  Bumping up to AWD, with two motors, you receive 295 hp.

Available Batteries For 2023

For 2023 VW adds another battery option for ID.4.

Previously available with only an 82 kWh power pack.  This year brings a smaller available 62 kWh battery option.

EPA Range For 2023 VW ID.4

In the world of EVs, the EPA estimates range with a few factors.

Battery size is of course a big one.  But also the vehicle’s curb weight is playing a bigger role.

So the smaller 62 kWh battery delivers an estimated 209 miles of range.  And the bigger 82 kWh battery brings up to 275 miles of range with it.

However, here’s where curb weight comes into play.  A fully loaded AWD ID.4 drops down to 255 miles of range.  And that’s with the bigger battery.

MPGe

Another acronym to learn.  But this is for all EVs.  Miles per gallon equivilent, or MGPe.

And for the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, the EPA is estimating the following:

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 MPGe:

  • RWD
    • 4,317 curbweight 115/107/99
    • 4,557 curbweight 115/107/98

  • AWD
    • 4,788 curbweight 104/99/93

*City/combined/highway

Towing capacity for the 2023 VW ID.4 is up to 2,200 pounds with the RWD option.  And up to 2,700 lbs with AWD.  Both instances are with trailers that have brakes.

What Does 2023 VW Look Like?

It’s a sharp-looking electric vehicle, without looking like an EV.  It’s not space-shippy.

Athletic standing, clean lines, and attractive from any angle.  Especially the profile, it looks like a new crossover SUV.

Volkswagen is coming after Tesla’s market share with ID.4.  The Tesla Model Y most closely compares with ID.4.

For eyes looking on with education. ID.4’s exterior fit and finish clobbers Model Y’s.  Because VW has been making cars for decades longer than Tesla.  And that pays off in the little things.  In the details.

Classifying ID.4 as a compact crossover SUV feels inaccurate.  But that’s the census.  It doesn’t look compact per se.

Exterior dimensions:

  • Wheelbase 108.7 to 108.9
  • Length 180.5
  • Height 64.5 to 65.1
  • Width 72.9
  •  Track:
    • Front 62.3 to 62.5
    • Rear 61.5

  • Ground clearance 6.0 to 6.8

Inside 2023 Volkswagen ID.4

ID.4 definitely does not feel compact inside.

And here again, Volkswagen’s fit and finish details excel.  The use of space is tremendous.

While it’s a high-tech electric vehicle feel, the interior remains a VW for sure.  Attention to detail here clobbers its Tesla rival.

Because Volkswagens are built for drivers.  Meaning people who actually use their cars.  Which anyone sitting in traffic can appreciate.

Teslas continue taking criticism for interiors its interiors.  For being far too spartan.  And for seemingly ignoring fit and finish details that VW excels at.

Additionally, backseat passengers enjoy stadium seating.  Giving them a great view of the road.  Far different from the traditional backseat experience.

Interior dimensions:

  • Headroom 40.6/37.9
  • Legroom 41.1/37.6
  • Shoulder room 57.5/55.9
  • Hip room 54.4/46.7

*All inches

ID.4 provides ample space for stuff.  With the backseats up there are 30.3 cubic feet of area for cargo.

And with the backseats down you get 64.2 cu ft.

Technology And Infotainment

ID.4 is Volkswagen’s first EV on the MEB platform for the US market.

So the tech is both game-changing and a glimpse of the carmaker’s direction.  Features that further connect us to our cars are on fully display in ID.4.

Haptic feedback on the steering wheel controls.  (Think video game controller vibrations.)  Smart infotainment system allowing touch and voice control.  And advanced driver assistance tech through IQ.Drive.

Plus Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit comes standard across all trims.  Along with a wireless app connect and that huge 12″ infotainment touchscreen.

These along with all the latest advancements in safety tech make the 2023 VW ID.4 a ‘must-consider

for electric vehicle shoppers.
