Topic: Defining what impulsion is in horses is the first part of the discussion because there are so many misconceptions in our horse world. We begin developing impulsion through our horse choosing to be both self-propelled and self-controlled when it come to forward motion as the very first step. Once our horse is both self-propelled and self-controlled, at least during walk, then we can begin to play with refining balance into a precise tempo. Using a metronome app or music is what helps US help our horse. Without an external, consistent sound, it is extremely for any of us to actually be accurate enough with our aids to fully develop impulsion in our horse. We need consistency somewhere in order to equalize our horse's physical ability to push and brake during motion.
