Topic: Taking the discussion about both hindquarter engagement and superfluidity to a practical level of daily work. How do we know if our horse's hindquarters are engaged or disengaged - by how stable they are when engaged and by how unstable they are when disengaged. When we can visually see our horse's hindquarters rolling, tilting or shifting around up on top, then we know that movement of the pelvic bones is putting excessive stress on the SIJ and compromising spinal stability through the sacrum and lumbar. Only when our horse is stable in the pelvic bones and connection of the pelvis to the sacrum and lumbar can our horse finally release all excessive tension through the neck, jaw, head and even through the thoracic sling that involves shoulder placement. The barrel and hindquarters must be very stable in order to free up the neck and shoulders.
