You Can't Stop the Waves But You Can Learn to Surf

July 06, 2022

Do you have intentional practices that improve your feelings of happiness and joy? In life we can't control everything that comes our way but we can control how we react. Being mindful and developing equanimity helps us manage the ups and downs of everyday life and helps us savor the precious passing moments. With an intentional mindfulness practice we increase the space between a stimulus and our response which helps us be proactive instead of reactive. When we are able to do this when the waves of anxiety, depression or grief come we can grab our surf board and ride the swells instead of being overwhelmed and crushed.

Pro Tip: "Are you in the shower or not?" Find moments throughout your day where you are 100% present, allowing your mind and senses to take in everything you're experiencing instead of thinking ahead or reviewing the past. If you find your mind wandering don't beat yourself up, take note and refocus on the present moment.

Amanda Palmer: “If you don’t deal with your demons, they go into the cellars of your soul and lift weights.”

Thich Nhat Hanh: “ The present moment is filled with joy and happiness and if you’re attentive you’ll see it."
