Every human is searching for how the various moments we face in life fit in to the bigger picture of life and God’s plan. Ecclesiastes tells us that we will never get all of these answers from God but we can still live life with skill. Pastor Scott shares how Ecclesiastes teaches us to live with skill when facing the reality that we will never receive from God all of the answers to life’s questions. Ecclesiastes’ instruction revolves around three key themes:

  • All is vanity – There is nothing that we will experience or pursue in life that will give us all the answers to life’s questions.
  • Fear God and keep his commandments – Despite the vanity of life regarding the quest for answers our lives do have meaning and we will be judged by God. Therefore we need to fear God and keep his commandments.
  • Enjoy life as a gift from God – The way we fear God and keep his commandments according to Ecclesiastes is not to cloister ourselves into a monastery and just read our Bibles 24/7 but it is to enjoy all of the moments of our life as a gift from God (of course not forgetting we will face judgement from God).

Ecclesiastes teaches us some of the most important lessons we need to learn to live our lives with skill. This overview will help prepare us for understanding the particular sections of Ecclesiastes as we study them each week.

11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (ESV)
