The Micah Hanks Program
TGR 01.14.19. The Quest for the Ultimate Weapon
This week on The Gralien Report, after a little lunar talk in relation to the first images sent back to Earth by China’s lunar probe, we look at how a cosmic telescope is peering all the way back to the beginning of time, as well as how people in Brazil recently experienced an arachnophobe’s worst nightmare, and why the Russian military was sent to assess a giant rockfall blocking Bureya River. We also look at why a Harvard astronomer has defended controversial theories about ‘Oumuamua, and how it still could represent alien technology.
Then later in the program, we are joined by Jeff Hecht, an award-winning freelance science and technology writer, a longtime contributor to New Scientist magazine, a contributing editor of Laser Focus World magazine, and the author of thirteen books, including Beam: The Race to Make the Laser; City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics; and his latest work, Lasers, Death Rays, and the Long, Strange Quest for the Ultimate Weapon He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and a life senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Jeff joins us to discuss the history of the development of laser weaponry and some of the intrigue that has surrounded the concept of a “death ray” even going back to ancient times.
