What Are The Yips in Golf?

Darin wrote in and said: "What are the yips? I've been a coach for 40 years and never heard of them. I can surmise what they are from your article, but please can you explain what they are?" What happens in your swing is tat it feels like you're stabbing, yipping, pulling back, freezing... A lot of golfers describe it as if someone has control over their arms like they lose full control of their arms and then they jerk and stab the ball. But, where do they yips come from?
