The MEN of INFLUENCE: TRANSFORMATION THROUGH MENTOR RELATIONSHIPS
Session 120 - WISDOM - It Doesn't Matter How Slowly You Go As Long As You Do Not Stop
Progress sometimes is slow. I remember going over my recovery journey and it was starting pretty much one addiction at a time. It was a process that happened throughout a couple of years, and slowly but surely one addiction fell off and then another, and then another.
The danger of trying to take on the whole elephant all at the same time. We pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and say, “I'm going to quit every single sin, and I'm going to live holy.” We will fail to understand that God's holiness is often progressive, and that is, it happens little by little, step by step. These things fall off as we progress upon the path that God wants us to progress on.
Yet often, we grab our club and we beat ourselves up because we haven't overcome a certain situation and or addiction yet. We need to give yourselves a little grace and take it easy on yourself. Don't try to walk on water if you're 100 miles away from the lake. Get to the lake first, right? Begin one thing at a time and progress forward.
What does that mean? That means if you are tackling alcohol, I wouldn't tackle nicotine at the same time. Focus first on getting sober and getting some clarity inside of your mindset and your belief system first. Get some positive routines beginning to happen in your life first. So when you step to conquer the next addiction, you already have a victory under your belt. When you face challenges in this manner, you're communicating to yourself that God is working through you and that you have the power to overcome.
If you're trying to do everything, you're communicating something different to your brain. Trying to eat the whole elephant in one sitting is exhausting. This will be a burden to you, and the load of this mindset will depress you and pull you down. Move slowly, progress forward, listen to the Spirit of God, and step by step, little by little, you'll see this exceptional transformation beginning to happen inside of your life.
