April 29, 2020

Bernadette Boden-Albala MPH, Dr. PH., Director and founding Dean of the future School of Population and Public Health at the University of California, Irvine, speaks to Pavan Lohia about emergency preparedness and the challenges that American hospitals, clinics and health centers face with the novel coronavirus responsible for COVID-19. In this episode, she will also be sharing details of her role as Dean of the UC Irvine School of Public Health and her efforts to reduce exposure to the students and community. Pavan and her discuss a new interventional test she designed to reduce Covid-19 hypertension risk among underserved populations as well as how her public health experience and expertise helped shape the UC Irvine & City of Irvine response to Covid-19.

Prior to joining UCI in July 2019, Dean Boden-Albala served as the Senior Associate Dean of Research and Program Development at the NYU College of Global Public Health where she co-created courses with UNICEF and the United Nations World Food Program. She also spearheaded the development of a brand new, one year, cross-continental Masters of Public Health (MPH) program that combines the best of classroom learning, collaborative research with faculty mentors, and real-world public health practice experience across three continents. When she is not busy building world-class public health programs at top universities, Dean Boden-Albala leads global clinical studies to identify measures to prevent chronic diseases. A couple highlights of her work include: a World Health Organization (WHO) project that sought to identify the optimum social networks to promote health policy dialogue in Moldova; an exploratory project in Ghana to assess gaps in lay knowledge of primary & secondary stroke prevention, treatment and recovery; also a collaborative effort between the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Grenada Ministry of Health to develop and evaluate interventions for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Dean Boden-Albala recently traded her New York residency for Southern California and continues exploring her hobbies of being a world traveler and avid scuba diver with her husband and two daughters.
