Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Quest for Change

Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Quest for Change

The Founding Assembly for the Platform for Progress Movement is Held

November 29, 2018

Mirsad Hadzikadic and his team selected Sunday, November 25, 2018, Statehood Day in Bosnia as Herzegovina, as the day to hold the founding assembly for the Platform for Progress Movement.  A historic day for the country and for the movement itself, as it served as the stage to officially announce publicly, the formation of the Platform for Progress Movement and to allow members to elect representatives to the eleven member presidential board, a supervisory board and to approve or disapprove the official movement statute and its structure.  This also marked the first time in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina that the diaspora, Bosnian citizens living outside of the country, were allowed to participate directly in this process.  It also introduced for the fist time, electronic voting for members viewing the live stream of the event.  Historic in itself, showing that it is possible to introduce and implement electronic voting to the election process throughout the country.   As one member of Mirsad’s team pointed out, “citizens were able to witness directly, the democratic process.”  The setting on this grey, cool, rainy day was Dom Mladih - Skenderija, a youth center that is part of a large entertainment and sports complex, nestled in the heart of Sarajevo.  Throngs of individuals arrived early and patiently stood in line in the light rain to gain access to the center.  As it turned out it was standing room only as citizens from Sarajevo, towns and cities from across Bosnia and Herzegovina and those viewing remotely laid witness to and were a part of history and democracy in the making. There to embrace the vision of hope that together, change is possible in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  Too no surprise, Mirsad was elected the first president of the Platform for Progress Movement.  A day and an event in which Mirsad described to me in one word, “magical.”
