Maine Politician Gives Behind-the-Scenes Perspective on Gay Politics

December 19, 2013

On a historic political day in America, the day the 17th state in the nation legalized gay marriage, I’m proud to bring you the first interview with an out, gay, elected politician.   Phil Bartlett served in the Maine Senate from 2004 to 2012 and is now serving on a four year term of the Democratic National Committee in Maine. He is also a practicing attorney focused on worker’s compensation.

In our conversation, we discuss:

  • The possibility of Maine electing the first gay Governor in the United States
  • Phil’s path from Harvard Law School to elected office and the DNC
  • How he ran a successful campaign to get elected to the Maine Senate
  • Coming out WHILE in office
  • Habits that are universal among winners in politics, business and other professions
  • The inside scoop about the passing of gay marriage in Maine
  • How you can get involved in gay politics
  • The importance of teaching kids, “No matter who you are, you can make it.”
