GameTime Cleveland 177: Back to Work

November 12, 2013

Summary:

The Browns and Buckeyes both return to action after BYE weeks. And they both got a little bit of help without even playing. The Cavs are struggling early learning Mike Brown’s system. This seems like 2003 all over again. Will top pick Anthony Bennett ever get out of his shooting funk? He’s in a doozy to start the year. Can Ohio State run the tables this year and still be left on the outside looking in on a BCS title opportunity? The Browns go to Cincinnati to try to get a win against the suddenly struggling Bengals. Is a playoff berth actually possible for this year’s squad? It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 29:29

1Q: Browns vs Bengals, part 2

  • Cincinnati lost in OT to the Ravens despite tying the game on a Hail Mary.

  • Bengals look very beatable. Andy Dalton struggling. Bengals lost DT Geno Atkins to IR. Earlier lost S Taylor Mays and CB Leon Hall to IR.

  • LB Quentin Groves placed on IR; done for the season.

  • Browns feeling confident heading into Cincinnati on Sunday. A win would give them a season sweep over the Bengals, in a tie in the loss column, and in good shape for thes stretch run.

  • Bengals have BYE after our game. Then they have: @SD, IND, @Pit, MIN, BAL

2Q: Browns outlook for the final 7 games

  • Team still hasn’t signed another QB. So it appears to be Campbell with Weeden as his backup from here on out.

  • Since Denver or KC will be one of the two wildcards, best shot for playoffs is still to win the AFC North.

  • If playoffs started today, we’d be 9th team (only 6 qualify). Jets would be 6th seed.

  • Jets (5-4) , Miami, Tennessee, Cleveland, Baltimore and San Diego all 4-5.

  • Browns remaining schedule: PIT, JAX, @NE, CHI, @NYJ, @Pit

3Q: Cavs not playing good defense

  • Not really a surprise, but the young Cavs are not yet getting Mike Brown’s defense or showing the commitment to play it. We’ve seen this before, haven’t we?

  • Split a back-to-back with Philly. Kyrie missed chances to win it at the end of 4th and 1st OT before sinking a shot to win it at the end of 2nd OT. Irving inconsistent in the early going.

  • Brown changing lineups already, sacking SF Earl Clark in favor of Alonzo Gee.

  • Brown also went to a three guard set against Philly, with Kyrie, Waiters and Jarrett Jack playing together.

  • Anthony Bennett looking like a bust. But it’s early, right?

  • Other notables:

    • Tyler Zeller: 1ppg in 8min/gm. Not very big expectations for him and he’s still failing to meet them.

    • Tristan Thompson 13.0 ppg

    • Dion Waiters 14.3 ppg

4Q: Buckeyes move up in the polls on their bye week

  • Oregon’s loss to Stanford moved the Buckeyes up to #3 in the polls.

  • Still possible that the Buckeyes could go undefeated and NOT play for the BCS title. Alabama (SEC) and Florida State (ACC) both look tough to beat.

    • Alabama:

    • remaining: @Miss St, Chattanooga, @ #7 Auburn

    • then play East champ for SEC Title (Missouri, S Carolina, Georgia?)
