GameTime Cleveland 173: Tribe One and Done

October 09, 2013
Summary:

The Indians make an early exit from the playoffs. We’ll look back at what happened against Tampa and look ahead to what may be changing in 2014 for the team. The Browns are in a first place tie after beating Buffalo in a Thursday night affair. They lost their starting QB in the process. Meanwhile, should the Buckeyes have made a change at QB in their game against Northwestern? Yes, they walked away with a win, but this was a sloppy game from Braxton. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 43:40

1Q: Tribe falls to Tampa in the Wildcard game

  • Indians lose 4-0 to Tampa in the one game playoff.

  • Salazar was striking out guys the first time through the lineup until a solo HR from Delmon Young in the 2nd inning.

  • P Alex Cobb was a problem for the Tribe, who couldn’t put any runs on the scoreboard.

  • Bourn, Swisher & Kipnis (top 3 in order) went 0-12. Asdrubal was also 0-4.

  • Gomes and Chisenhall went 5 for 8, though many want to fault Lonnie for playing off the line on the play that scored a pair in the 3rd.

2Q: What’s Next for the Tribe?

  • Who comes back and who will be gone in 2014?

  • Ubaldo likely to be a free agent.

  • Will Kazmir return?

  • Chris Perez and Vinnie Pestano likely not to return either.

  • Lineup is all locked up.

  • Will they use Asdrubal as trade bait to get a hitter or another pitcher?

3Q: Browns beat Buffalo

  • The Browns defeated the Bills 37-24 in a Thursday Night Football contest.

  • Brian Hoyer and EJ Manuel both left the game with knee injuries. Hoyer left early in the 1st Qtr.

  • Weeden came in to replace him and made a few big plays to get a TD and put us in FG position on another drive. He finished 13-24, 197 yards and 1 TD (no INTs).

  • Travis Benjamin set a team record for punt return yards (7 for 179 yards), featured by his great 79 yard TD return late in the 2nd qtr.

  • TJ Ward had a pick 6 off rookie Jeff Tuel late in the game.

  • Defense gave up a long (54 yard) TD run to CJ Spiller. Longest run against this Defense this year.

  • Desmond Bryant was taken to the hospital during the game due to shortness of breath. With Sheard and Winn also out, this had to have had an effect on the front 7.

  • Team wore brown jerseys and brown pants on the night the team honored Jim Brown.

  • Lions in town on Sunday.

4Q: OSU struggled but pulled out a win

  • #4 Buckeyes beat #16 Northwestern 40-30 to improve to 6-0 on the season.

  • Urban Meyer did not listen to GameTime Cleveland last week or he would have known to exploit the Northwestern pass defense. He kept Braxton in the game, who fumbled twice, threw an INT, missed an wide open WR in the end zone and missed badly on many other throws.

  • He also ran too much, trying to impose his will to run against a tough rush defense. On their opening drive and the go-ahead TD drive late in the 4th, the team moved by passing the ball. Otherwise, they mostly rushed during the game.

  • Guiton should have played. Meyer admitted he was very close to making a change. Lucky they did not.

  • Carlos Hyde came up huge with a career high 168 yards and 3 TDs.

  • TD on fumble at end of game with Northwestern backed up deep provided the 10 point margin in the final score. This was a close game.

  • Defense stopped NU on downs late in the game. This was huge.

  • Buckeyes are off this week.
