GameTime Cleveland 169: Browns Kick Off

September 04, 2013
Summary:

The Buckeyes got off to a sloppy start after showing early dominance against Buffalo. The Browns await their turn to get things going, and their chance comes this week as they host the Miami Dolphins. What’s in store for the home team this year? Which teams will earn a spot in the NFL playoffs? Tom and Mike take a look. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 53:01

1Q: Ohio State looked good and sloppy

  • Against a weak opponent, Ohio State dominated early and hung on to a 40-20 victory.

  • Braxton Miller was more patient in the pocket and accurate on his throws including the 47 yard bomb to Devin Smith for the games’ first score.

  • Curious to see them go for two points after the first two TDs.

  • Miller threw an INT on a screen (didn’t see the LB standing there).

  • You can see some of the talent (freshman speedster Dontre Wilson will have some big plays this year, despite fumbling when he got hit Saturday).

  • You can also see some of the problems (10 new starters on defense).

  • It will take some time for this team to hit their full stride.

2Q: Roster changes a plenty in Berea

  • Why so many moves? Was Brandon Jackson so bad that we favored cutting him and signing someone who hasn’t even practiced with the team? There is no one to back up Trent, unless you consider Ogbonnaya the backup (thought he was the starting fullback?).

  • Is it a joke that we cut both kickers? Can’t you just see this game coming down to a field goal this weekend and our guy off the street missing it. The team signed former Brown Billy Cundiff on Tuesday.

  • Thin at WR with Josh Gordan suspended for 2 games, David Nelson never healthy enough and Jordan Norwood cut. We have only 4 WRs right now (Little, Benjamin, Bess and Cooper).

  • Thin at CB and S and still need some help for the O Line.

  • Top draft pick Barkevius Mingo unlikely for opener (lung injury).

3Q: Browns host the Dolphins in Week 1

  • Can they win a season opener? ESPN Mag has them starting season 0-4 and ending up 5-11. Uggh!

  • ESPN’s preview on the Dolphins.

  • Ryan Tannehill has a new weapon (former Steeler WR Mike Wallace).

  • No more Reggie Bush (now with Lions).

  • They lost TE Dustin Keller for the season with an injury.

  • Just how vanilla were we playing on both sides of the ball in preseason? Will we look like a pro team in Week 1? Can a team really flip the switch that fast?

4Q: Our NFL 2013 Playoff Picks

  • Each year, we take a guess at how we think the NFL divisions will play out during the season. Tom is usually more optimistic about the Browns’ chances than Mike. Glass half-full vs. half-empty, we suppose.
  • Here are our predictions for the 2013 season. We’re sure some of these will be spectacularly wrong and others will be spot on.
