GameTime Cleveland 166: AL Central Showdown

August 07, 2013
Summary:

The Indians lock horns with the Tigers this week in a battle for 1st place. Will the Tribe stand up to their division bully or fall out of the race? And the Browns have been battling in Berea as they get ready for preseason games to get underway. The Rams are in town this week. It’s our first chance to see Brandon Weeden run the new offense. It’s GameTime!

Hosts: Mike Kresic, Tom Kresic

Running Time: 40:40

1Q: Showdown with Detroit

  • Four games at home with Detroit.

  • As good as we’ve been playing (2nd best record since 6/11) we haven’t made up much ground on DET

  • Kazmir has been outstanding lately, too.

  • Credit Francona with subbing Danny Salazar for Ubaldo in the series. Ubaldo has been lit up by Detroit this year. No way Wedge or Acta would have been bold enough to make this move.

2Q: Critical week for the Tribe

  • Jhonny Peralta suspended for 50 games for PEDs in conjunction with the BioGenesis investigation. Detroit knew this was coming and traded for a SS before last week’s trade deadline. But he was an AllStar this year and was hitting .300+ so this will have to hurt their lineup, right?

  • Can the Indians stand up to the bully? Or will they assume the fetal position? It’s one thing to beat up on lowly CHISOX, KC and MIAMI. But they have not done well against the good teams this year. This is their chance.

  • Time to ride some hot bats. Let’s see more of Yan Gomes at Catcher. His defense rocks and he’s hot at the plate, too.

3Q: Browns Camp

  • Weeden watch – reviews from camp are that he’s been up/down. Game action will give us a better feel even though it’s just preseason.

  • We should get an idea of just how much work is still needed by the offense and defense.

  • Teams won’t show much of the playbook, of course.

  • Rams here on Thursday.

4Q: Browns Foes

  • How will the Defense look? Front seven should be the strength but that backfield is clearly the weak link.

  • Baltimore lost Dennis Pita for the year (injury). Flacco won’t have Anquan Boldin (49ers) to throw to either. Ravens D has been remade. Lost a bunch of players but got some big ones to sign too (like Elvis Dumervil).

  • Steelers: Big Ben still hurting. Can he stay healthy? He lost Mike WIlliams (WR) to Miami in FA. James Harrison also gone (though so are Cribbs, MoMass and Colt).

  • Bengals: should continue to be strong. but is Andy Dalton the real thing or not?

  • so many changes in the NFL. It will take a few weeks to get used to where everyone went. Still weird to see Colt and Phil Dawson in 49ers uniforms.
