Student Financial Aid News
+ Episode 404 - like the error!
+ From Inside Higher Ed: The Career Education Corp. has had a brutal year of regulatory scrutiny, management turmoil and tanking stock prices. Wednesday, the for-profit provider of higher education took the latest step toward regaining its footing by announcing plans to sell 13 campuses that have underperformed financially and/or been beset by problems. The 13 campuses that Career Education said it would try to sell â which include 9 that operate in the Northeast as either Katherine Gibbs School or Gibbs College, two Brooks College campuses in California, Lehigh Valley College, in Pennsylvania, and McIntosh College, in New Hampshire.
+ The Kaiser Permanente Fund for Health Education has awarded $6 million in grants for nurse education, among the first grants in a $20 million fund aimed at alleviating the state's nursing shortage. Samuel Merritt College in Oakland received nearly $5.5 million to expand its accelerated 12-month bachelor's nursing program to students in the South Bay and San Francisco. The funds will be allocated to teacher salaries, equipment and classroom expenses.
+ From the Chronicle of Higher Education: A state court has ordered Pennsylvaniaâs nonprofit student-loan agency to turn over financial records to a group of news agencies that have requested the documents, according to The Patriot-News, a newspaper in Harrisburg, Pa. The court found that the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, known as Pheaa, had violated a state open-records law when it refused requests from the Associated Press, The Patriot-News, and a television station in Pittsburgh for records detailing spending on travel by agency employees and board members, among other things. Pheaa had argued that that it didnât have to turn over the documents because they contained âtrade secretsâ that, if revealed, could benefit its competition in the student-loan industry.
+ In economic news, the Federal Reserve is still concerned about a high rate of core inflation, meaning that interest rate cuts in the funds rate are not likely any time soon. This means a stable, if high, Prime Rate, so for those people with variable rate credit cards and mortgages, relief isn't coming any time soon.
