Student Financial Aid News
+ It's Friday the 13th!
+ 2 1/2 weeks until Halloween
+ "Young parents who are from poor families and are enrolled in college would be eligible for a special type of welfare assistance to help them afford to stay in school, under a developing Ohio Board of Regents program," The Plain Dealer reports. "Students who qualify could receive up to $1,200 in vouchers this school year to pay for expenses ranging from buying books to making a car payment to paying a baby sitter -- anything that helps them stick with school. ...The $30 million earmarked for [the program] comes from an executive order from Gov. Bob Taft, in which he released $199 million in unspent welfare money. But any money not spent when Taft leaves office in December is not guaranteed, unless the next governor agrees to Taft's order. And neither gubernatorial candidate has committed to this program."
+ Gettysburg College announced Thursday that, following a faculty vote, the SAT would no longer be required for undergraduate admissions. College officials said that they believed high school grades did a better job of predicting college success. The Gettysburg vote comes amid reports that many liberal arts colleges are considering similar moves.
+ "The cost of a four-year education has grown by 600% within the last 30 years. It's a huge investment for families and students, many who rely on loans and scholarships to help pay the hefty bill. But there's reason to be on alert for scholarship scams," Keloland TV reports. "A letter was sent home to West Central high school students, warning about companies that claim to give out legitimate scholarships. But most don't give what they promise and responding to these scams could cost you thousands of dollars even before tuition bills start coming in."

+ In lighter news, what does Margaret Spellings, the secretary of education, have in common with Carson Kressley of âQueer Eye for the Straight Guy,â Sam Waterston of âLaw & Order,â Susan Lucci of âAll My Childrenâ and Isaac Mizrahi, the designer? All will be guests on this fallâs âCelebrity Jeopardyâ shows.
