Health and Healing
To have health and healing, we often think that someone must do something special to us. That we’re not good enough for health and healing to occur naturally within our bodies.
Neither of those statements are 100% true and yet there is an element of truth to each one. Consider the following verse from the New International Bible.
Jeremiah 33:6 NIV
“Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.”
I believe the term “peace and security” applies to the equilibrium we strive for in mind, body and spirit. What is absolutely true is that the great God of the universe designed our bodies to be able to heal themselves naturally. All the while we grow, change, learn and mature, we can feel peace and security as the tides of physical health ebb and flow. They encourage the teaching, the growing and even the changing process. That’s when you and I finally become creatures in God and of God, capable of actively participating in our own health and happiness. And, in the end, responsible for it.

What makes any of this feel less true is when we get sick enough, we let insecurity creep in. We feel vulnerable because the answers are not black and white before us, staring us in the face. These fears about our health can stem from a sudden, communicable disease onslaught or they can gradually manifest from a gradual or long term problem rearing its head, such as a devastating chronic illness. Either way your body is capable of rallying to support you, the end goal being to be healthier once again.
I’m in that process myself right now and I’m in a unique position to guide you through your journey, too,, because of my twenty year history with illness. The last few weeks, in addition to normal pesky symptoms, I’ve had some form of poison ivy all over, a heat rash made more complicated with a fungus infection and Shingles broken out completely around my waist. At times they were 2 to 4 inches wide!
Shingles is the body reawakened to the the old infection from childhood, Chicken Pox. Like me, if you had Chicken Pox, your chances of getting Shingles in latter adulthood are great. In my case, I had the Shingles vaccine a couples months ago and that one act to protect my health apparently made a huge difference. Yes, I’m broken out. The multitude of bumps itch and tingle like crazy, but I’m in no pain. How marvelous! I feel so thankful that I was protected in this way and will be eternally grateful for God leading me down that path.
If I had panicked when I began to break out all over in three separate, itchy rashes, said “Whoa is me!” and had no faith that I could return to a better state of health and healing, I surely would be a lot worse today. I look back on so many times when God has healed me. He grew me, finally leading me to the recognition that I am responsible for the state of my own health.
We live in a world of our past and our present make us who we are. Germs, emotions and tons of stress intrude upon our inner world. Unless we seek in a mighty way to be balanced and whole in mind, body and spirit, our personal health and healing will continue to suffer.
