Episode 13 – A Conversation about Integration with Sherene Joseph

October 10, 2023

Sherene Joseph, a writer who was born in India, raised in Oman, and moved to the U.S. after getting married, shares her experiences as a Third Culture Kid. She talks about navigating life between cultures and traditions and the blessings of being an immigrant. Her family attended an immigrant church for nearly 14 years and she discusses what the immigrant church does right and what are the areas in which they can improve. Sherene also shares her views on parenting as immigrants.

Takeaways from this episode:

  1. This episode reminded me that God is with us through all of life’s transitions. We might move from one place to another, or go through seasons of change, but God remains the same. His character does not change. We can count on His faithfulness and steadfast love. His promises remain true. We can hold on to them and trust in Him.
  2. Immigrants often have to live in between two or more cultures, the culture of their country of origin and that of their new, adopted homeland. Similarly, believers live in between cultures, whether or not they are immigrants. We are called to hold fast to the values of the kingdom of God which are often countercultural. At the same time, we are called to engage with the culture of our times in loving ways so we point them to Christ, without losing our identity as children of God and citizens of heaven.
