Jonathan Sharp - Intouch Marketing

My background is about as varied as it can be:  I was a translator for UK Immigration straight out of college and hated it!  After only 6 weeks I went back to uni to train as a chef, and went on to get a degree in hotel management.

In the UK every practical degree has a year out in industry and I designed my own by applying to Walt Disney World, Florida as a UK Cultural Representative working in the British Pub in EPCOT Centre.  It was my first exposure to true branding and image.  Everything in Disney is there to play on every sense.  False smells, false sounds, optical illusions... I have never since worked for a company so concerned with image.

After completing my degree back in the UK, I represented GB in sailing and played professional rugby for a time. The need for travel was tugging at me however and an opportunity came to work on a cruise ship.  The idea was that I would get someone else to pay me to go around the world then come back and be a hotel manager.  Eleven years later I was still there having travelled the world, spent time in France, Italy and Japan project managing the building of new ships.

I was posted to the Sydney office in 2005, met Alex - my now wife - and resigned from sea later that year.  We now have two children - Matilda aged 4 this week and Eden aged 8 months.

Not knowing what to do with my feet in one place, I started my own business - Cloak & Dagger - more as an experiment as to whether I could start up a business and run it.  It is still going now.  I got a job as national sales manger for a travel company and spent the next few years (in one role or another) training people about cruise ships, designing presentation and talking about small business marketing.  This year I thought It was about time I put my money where my mouth is and took on my area as an intouch marketing principal, making money helping other businesses succeed through effective marketing.

Since I started I have sold more of my time designing websites for business with integrated social media than anything else.

Ashton Bishop - Step Change Marketing
