Lindy McLeod - The Market Basket Co.
The Market Basket Co. was founded by Lindy McLeod in October 2003.
It was during Lindy’s time working in London and travelling through Europe that the idea to sell French style market baskets occurred to her. Lindy subsequently travelled to Morocco to source the best possible product to bring back to Australia.
“My previous career (working within Human Resources) gave me a lot of confidence dealing with people at all levels and ultimately the strength to start my own business†says Director Lindy McLeod.
Since launching The Market Basket Co, Lindy has discovered a passion for being the ultimate decision maker and steering the direction she will take her business. “I find if I keep all my goals on a list, eventually I get things done, it helps keep everything on track†adds Lindy.
Lindy’s advice to those considering starting their own business is, “start small and keep it manageable. If you’re considering selling a product, do it yourself before you employ any staff so you learn who your customers are and what they like; you can then make appropriate changes as needed.â€
As a retailer of a product with many ecological benefits, Lindy is inspired about this cause “The Market Basket Co baskets are so versatile and I love when customers write to me to say they’ve found a new use for their basket – I’ve heard everything from storing towels, wood even the smaller baskets used as a table centrepiece! It makes me feel good knowing one product can do so much and help the environment too.
I’ve seen them filled with books at the library, fruit and veg at the markets and flowers at a front door†says Lindy.

Mary Dawes - First Aid For You
Mary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You has a family history of ambulance service workers and firstaid trainers in her family. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that after completing her Masters of Adult Education and Certificate IV in assessment and workplace training, followed shortly by her First AidCertification, Mary realised her life’s calling was educating and empowering others in the field of FirstAid.
Previously, Mary had worked in the Human Resources department for Krispy Kreme and as a State Trainer for Boost Juice, so while a major element of her career had always been on other employees, it seemed a natural progression to make helping others the core offering of her business.
First Aid For You was officially launched at the 2010 Baby and Toddler Expo in Sydney, with resounding success.
“The response at the expo in 2010 was brilliant, actually being able to explain face-to-face what FirstAid For You can do, to those who came by the stand was a big milestone for me†says Director ofFirst Aid For You Mary Dawes.
Since launching, First Aid For You has seen over 3,000 parents across Australia complete the FirstAid For You Families training course.
Speaking of her passion of First Aid For You, Mary says the interaction with variety of people and locations is one of the many perks.
“One day I could be sitting in someone’s living room in regional New South Wales, the next a harbour side boardroom in Sydney and the following week, a park in Victoria. I just love that fact that no two groups are the same,†adds Mary.
Mary’s advice for anyone considering starting their own business is simple. “Have a good support network and try and surround yourself with wonderful people.â€
“I’m fortunate that my family plays a large role in the day-to-day running of First Aid For You. We have a small organisational chart on the wall in the office, displaying everyone’s role and tasks for the week, it certainly makes things easier" adds Mary.
