So let's talk a little bit about, can you actually really reverse cataracts? You know, I get this question every day on social media. So you can tell from my gray hair. I've been doing this a few years. And when I first started out in practice, my first practice was in the Philadelphia area. That's where I grew up in Pennsylvania. And I affiliated with a holistic eye doctor, in Philadelphia, his name was Dr. Ellis Edelman. And I started working in his practice when I was 28 years old, he was 62 at the time, and I began counseling patients when they would come for an eye exam, and I would see their cataracts.
And I would just offer them some very basic dietary recommendations. You know, like, reduce your sugar, eat more vegetables, have some berries in the summer, stop eating artificial sweeteners and processed foods. And within three months, when I'd had them come back, I find that a high percentage of people had reversed their cataracts. And so I was 2829 30 years old, just getting into practice, way back then, I saw that just by changing your diet a little bit, you could improve your lens health. And of course, today, if we fast forward, I have a lot more sophisticated techniques. So, therefore, my percentage of helping people reverse cataracts is even higher. But when I go into the literature, because I know some people like the science, Harvard Medical School, actually has a specific program called the ocular regenerative Regenerative Medicine Institute.
And they're doing ongoing research on developing methods to regenerate eye tissues from a variety of diseases from glaucoma, macular degeneration, corneal disease, and even ocular cancer. I know most of you found out about cataracts, and you may have been surprised when the doctor told you you had cataracts because you ate pretty well, you had a pretty healthy lifestyle. And then when you ask the question, well, are there any integrative things that one can do to improve lens health, either from a preventative place or proactive place, you're probably met with a pretty terse, know that we're just going to watch the cataract ripen, I like to use that word ripen. And once it right ripens, we will take it out. And it's all because of your age. So I'm going to show you a lot of ways to tap into your regenerative abilities. Now, when I lecture to regular doctors, a lot of times they start laughing when I use the words, eyes, and regeneration in the same sense sentence. But there are some scientific principles that you can't argue with. The first is that you are not destined just by your DNA.
I often say this, that you don't have to live out your genetic destiny. Just because your mom and dad had XYZ disease. That doesn't mean that you're going to get it.
