#128: Core Decision #4 — Talk About Emotions
So often, we stay living on the surface because life has a way of keeping us there. We go to work. We take the kids to school. We all come home, grab dinner, and get ready for bed. Repeat.
Unless we get intentional about using key moments in the day to talk about emotions, our homes can become a microcosm of the culture around us–with few people feeling heard or understood. The longer this goes on, the further apart we grow from our spouse and kids.
In this episode, we talk about why it’s important to talk about emotions, and how to begin doing so. We focus primarily on listening to and understanding your kids, but also how to create the environment of emotional language throughout the environment of your home.
We specifically talk about:
* The difference between emotional safety, empathy, and emotional intelligence * Why these terms matter for how we lead others and parent our kids* Personal examples of differentiating our kid’s emotions from their behavior* How we talk about emotions in our marriage* How to help our kids feel valued and understood
