Howard has spent a lot of time researching epidemics and interviewing people who have lived through horrific pandemics. He specializes in two areas, the social history of medicine (especially epidemics and pandemics, medical education and hospitals) and the history of universities. Both fields feature prominently in his book "plague, pox, and pandemics".
