- Hi, I'm Isabella Janney with the Colorado Springs Daily and today is July 10th, 2020. Our first segment today, we'll talk about the Manitou Incline closure. Our second story today is about a bear attack that happened near Aspen. And, our last story of the day is about a comet streaking past Earth.
- Today's first segment brings us to Manitou, where the Manitou Incline has been closed for months. There are signs throughout Manitou Springs alerting people of the closure and he most popular Incline group on Facebook has dozens of posts talking about the closure. But despite all of that, some hikers are ignoring the closure and then calling for help from El Paso County Search and Rescue. Temperatures near Manitou Springs have topped 90 degrees this week, and there are no water sources near the top of the incline. The popular trail, which ascends nearly 3,000 stairs up Mount Manitou, is temporarily closed due to a combination of safety precautions for COVID-19 and a dispute over parking management between Manitou and Colorado Springs. No estimate has been given on a timeframe to reopen the trail, but the two cities are working on a reservation system to use it.

- Our second story today is about a bear attack that happened inside a home near aspen on Friday morning. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers said a man heard noises in his home around 1:30 a.m. and found a bear. The bear swiped at him, resulting in severe head and neck lacerations. The homeowner was taken to the hospital and had to undergo surgery for non-life-threatening injuries. A search using tracking hounds is underway for the bear. CPW said when it is found, the bear will be euthanized due to the nature of the incident. The bear matches the description of one that has been frequenting the neighborhood for several days and it may also be the same bear that has been reported in the area over the past couple of years. This is the first bear attack in Aspen this year. In 2019, wildlife officers responded to three bear attacks on people in the Aspen area.

- Our third story today is about a newly discovered comet that is streaking past Earth. Comet Neowise is the brightest comet visible from the Northern Hemisphere in a quarter-century. It swept within Mercury’s orbit a week ago andits close proximity to the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris tail. Now the comet is headed towards Earth, with closest approach in two weeks. Scientists say the comet is about 3 miles across. The comet will be visible across the Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it heads back toward the outer solar system. While it's visible with the naked eye in dark skies with little or no light pollution, binoculars are needed to see the long tail, according to NASA. It will be about 7,000 years before the comet returns and it is the brightest comet since the mid-1990s for stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere.
