Bill of Rights Day
3796 – December 15, 2025 – Bill of Rights Day – It was on Monday, September 17, 1787, forty-one delegates solemnly met in the east room of Independence Hall for the signing. As the convention was coming to a close, George Mason rose to his feet and said, “I would rather cut off my right hand than to put it to that document.”
“But Colonel Mason,” James Madison plead, “Why at this late hour would you not sign it?”
“Because it does not have a Bill of Rights,” Mason Replied.
Madison shot back, “But Colonel Mason, we have not given the Federal Government enough power to trample our rights.”
Mason’s answer was classic, “But they will, they always do!”
Bill of Rights Day, observed annually on December 15, commemorates the ratification of the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution in 1791, protecting fundamental American liberties like freedom of speech, religion, and press, and it serves as a reminder of these essential rights and the nation’s commitment to them, as established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941.
