When you're first getting to know someone, talking about your past is tacky and frankly kind of a turn off. In a relationship, though, it can lead to some insight about how each person grew into the partner they are. Of course there are the basic ground rules like "no comparisons" and "no unnecessary gory details" and whatnot, but anyone with a grownup mentality should understand that.
