Episode 131: Atheist for Christianity, Please Don’t Describe Criminals, and Multiculturalism vs Safety

January 25, 2016

First, I'll ask you to "Name That Quote". Can you do it? "There are no Christians, as far as I know, blowing up building. I am not aware of any Christian suicide bombers. I am not aware of any major Christian denomination that believes the penalty for apostasy is death. I have mixed feelings about the decline of Christianity, in so far as Christianity might be a bulwark against something worse."

Second, we'll try to accurately describe criminal suspects without mentioning their ethnicity, nationality, skin color and height. (Height? Really?)

Third, we'll put the love of multiculturalism into practice.

We’re going to play “Name That Quote” again on Consider This. That’s the game where I read a quote, and you try to figure out who said it. The game is, of course, rigged, because the quote is usually not something you ever expected to hear coming from the person who said it. So here we go; name that quote!
There are no Christians, as far as I know, blowing up building. I am not aware of any Christian suicide bombers. I am not aware of any major Christian denomination that believes the penalty for apostasy is death. I have mixed feelings about the decline of Christianity, in so far as Christianity might be a bulwark against something worse.
Except for the last sentence, this could have been some Christian pundit or apologist. But no, that would be too easy. So it’s someone who’s not thrilled with Christianity itself, but recognizes, at the very least, that it’s fundamentally better than some other religions. This is guy making a cultural value judgment. Wow, how positively 20th century of him!

So who do you think this is? Could be Bill Maher, but no, it’s not him. Good guess, if that’s what you thought. No, these are the words of major spokesman for atheism, Richard Dawkins. The words are from 2010, but a graphic of them has been making the rounds on social media recently.

His words should be taken to heart by those who think all religion is the same, or by those who seem to have forgotten the rather positive effect and influence Christianity has had on Western Civilization, and it’s one of the reasons Western Civilization has advanced as it has. I’m not claiming perfection – we’re only human, if I may notice – but on the whole it has been positive.

So get out there and thank a Christian! Or a Jew, for that matter. They don’t call it the Judeo-Christian heritage for nothing. OK, maybe not actively thank them, but maybe just keep that in mind. Because who knows; Christianity might be the bulwark against something worse … like atheism.
