How a Coffee Roaster make his morning coffee - Compliment Coffee Roasting

August 26, 2015

Lately I have been considering what it is to have a cup of coffee with a good friend. It’s a conversation to catch up, maybe just small talk or purely sitting in their presence, where no words need be exchanged.

Regardless the goal is to just be with them and GROW your relationship.

Home Roasted Coffee - Huntington Beach
Coffee is really just an excuse for sitting and enjoying each others company… realistically the coffee does not need to be there. But great coffee is a bonus! Enter Home Roasted coffee…

Home roasted coffee is not produced in large quanity; it takes time, effort and attention to do well…and due to the limitations in how much you have you may have to pick and choose whom you want to share with. Some good candidates to taste the fruits of your labor are more than likely a best friend, a family member, some you deeply respect, or someone you want to know better. Regardless these people are ones you would like to have a relationship with or you would not be sharing something you slaved over.

For this reason I purpose an idea… a movement rather!

Dropping off an order in New Mexico!
I call it “Compliment Coffee”

There are only two guidelines:
1: Every time home roasted beans are shared both parties must exchange “a compliment or something they appreciate about the other person.”

It may be uncomfortable but I promise you it will be worth it. Remember the only reason you are meeting this person for coffee in the first place is to spend time and be with them. Why not share a little piece of you with them… aren’t they worth it?

2: After the first cup, the receiver should consider returning the favor and “put in some work.”

Just like a relationship, sharing your awesome home roasted coffee is a two way street. If the other person does not have roasting tools, perhaps one of the next meetings will include a roasting time in addition to the coffee time. Relationships include compromise too.

This is our movement… Killer Coffee with a side of Honest Conversation.

About the Coffee Beans:

What happens if you don't pay attention to coffee as it's roasting...
How we Roast:
We roast our coffees in a very romantic way… with our sense of smell, sight and hearing. Most large specialty coffee companies have made coffee roasting into a science of temperatures and timing, which does produce great coffee, but losing the old “Art of Coffee Roasting” in the process.
Analogy… If we were artists we would not mass-produce thousands of copies of a “Mona Lisa;” we are in it for the uniqueness of each piece of artwork. The beauty comes from the subtle differences of each piece.
Our coffees are unique… giving a very unique coffee experience to our Coffee Club Members.
We are “at one” with our coffee beans during the roast and are required to pay extremely close attention to each and every roast.

Direct Trade Coffee
Direct Trade:
We prefer to source our coffees by “Direct Trade.” “Direct Trade” is a personal negotiation with small farmers, providing them a fair price and systems to encourage high quality coffee. Although there is no certification currently for “Direct Trade” coffee, there is transparency and quality. It was started by a movement of coffee companies whom didn’t agree with some aspect of “Fair Trade.”
We have made a conscious effect to keep the grower’s best interests in mind. By taking part in “Direct Trade” we feel our farmers, workers and their families are able to have a better quality of life. In fact one of the largest “Direct Trade” coffee proponents, Intelligentsia Coffee, pays their grower 25% over what “Fair Trade” pays them.

Organic Coffee
Are they all “Organic?”
Not all of our coffees are “USA Agriculture Certified” organic since we have chosen to source many of our coffees through the “Direct Trade” process. However we do carry some organic coffees from certain origins we do not have a “Di
