What Will Public Safety Committee Do?

June 18, 2021

The Public Safety Committee of the Chicago City Council has an opportunity to both demonstrate its independence from the Mayor and deliver a really meaningful opportunity for oversight of the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The Committee can as do something they have only really done over the last 20 years which is use the authority of the oversight committee to try to stop the abuse and misconduct with the CPD.

Our report on 20 years of agenda items from the Committee proves without a shadow of a doubt that this Committee has virtually nothing to restrain the CPD and oversee the police accountability system until it is way too late for their actions to have any impact. They have passed three major reforms over the last 20 years but all three were essentially negotiated with the Mayor's Office with the Alderman doing nothing more than acting as a rubber stamp to legislation negotiated behind closed doors with little to no input from the alderpeople. The Committee exists to provide democracy theater for the public to believe their is informed debate happening.
