C4P 16: Power of Words

September 21, 2016

Bible Passages: Psalm 19:14, Proverbs 10:19

Power of Words

Do you remember the old adage:

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”

I grew up with: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

I think we all agree that we have felt the very painful sting of names and/or words. As parents, we want to consider our words and attitudes and how our children are affected by them.  Can you remember when someone said something to you that just crushed your spirit? It stayed with you a long time, didn’t it? Sometimes we forget those painful moments for a time and then something happens to bring them to the forefront again. Often the memories come complete with the feelings we felt as well. Of course, we would like to never be reactive or unkind or negative in our words to our children. The reality is that we will fail. Join us as we discuss the struggle and offer some suggestions.

Tip for the Week – Sharpening Your Child’s Brain Foundation

When our first three children were born, we cared about their development, just like any concerned parent. However, we really didn’t begin to have a passion to understand how we could facilitate good brain development for all of them until our Amy was born with a syndrome that carried with it multiple disabilities. The journey of the last 20 years has taught us much about stimulating the brain to create a strong foundation and then to build upon that foundation. One of the most foundational child development steps that you want to make sure is strong, is cross patterning.

We will cover these points:

· What is cross patterning?

· Why do I care?

· How can I tell if this child development step is strong?

· What can I do if it is not?
