Her post-graduate degree in human nutrition led her in the wrong direction. She did publish a groundbreaking study about diet and ADHD in children. One of the scientists who did work with her is also keto now. Only years later (about 5 years ago) did she learn about the health benefits of LCHF diets and therapeutic ketogenic diets. She's in Canada, and Canada has similar dietary guidelines. 5 years ago, a friend came to her desiring to put a family member on a keto diet –– this led her to Jason Fung. In particular, she uses ketogenic diets to treat seizure disorders and as adjunct treatment for glioblastoma.  Her very first approach was very high fat, moderate to low carb diet plans. Then, she got into IF as well with very high animal protein. She utilizes different low carb diets for different reasons. Epileptic diets, for example, may need something different than a low carb power lifting or weight loss diet. Joy makes sure to take each individual circumstance into account in her work.
