Episode 35: Did DJ Fickey commit suicide or was he murdered?

June 07, 2020

For this episode, I spoke to Amanda, about the death of her brother Donald “DJ” Edward Fickey Jr. who was only 27 when he died. On October 3, 2016 in Flintstone, GA. Walker County 911 operators received a frantic call from what is known as a local drug den; the caller stated he needed help because someone had committed suicide. The local sheriff’s office investigated and initially ruled his death a suicide by shotgun, as did the GBI who was also called in to do a limited autopsy.

However, Amanda Shirley, Dj’s Sister and her family believe Dj’s death was a homicide and not a suicide. Amanda said DJ had made plans for the future and had no reason to commit suicide.
During the investigation the caller changed his story multiple times, failed a polygraph test and offered an unbelievable, if not impossible explanation as to how DJ shot himself. According to Amanda, two witnesses watched then entire scene unfold. One was DJ’s wife Brandy. Both witnesses said the man who called 911 shot and killed DJ. Even with witnesses, authorities have not changed DJ’s cause of death or treated DJ’s death as a homicide.
